See Your Bigger Picture.

I was feeling unmotivated and sluggish the other day and didn’t really feel like going to my spinning class.  A few days of holiday overindulgence and a few skipped workouts were just the fuel I needed to indulge in some juicy negative thinking.

‘It’s probably useless.  A one-hour workout isn’t going to burn all the calories I’ve eaten in the past few days.’

Well, I gave myself a nudge out the door and showed up for my class – unwillingly at first…but after a few minutes started to lose the resistance.

After class I sat down and thought about what this one-hour class really meant beyond the calories I’d just burned.

This is my bigger picture experience:

  • I moved oxygen through my body, increasing my lung capacity & sending oxygen to the cells & through my blood to my limbs & all throughout my body.
  • I worked my heart and leg muscles, making them stronger and more resilient to stress and injury.
  • I cleared the cobwebs in my head (so to speak).
  • I gained new perspective: I am not a slave to negative thinking.  I can deliberately choose to think and act in a way that supports what I ultimately want for myself.
  • I was able to move out of my head and into my body – bringing me instantly in touch with the physical sensations in my body and into the present moment.
  • I spent time enjoying my own company.
  • I listened to some fun rock songs.
  • I got to feed off of other people’s uplifting energy.
  • I surprised myself with how much resistance I could put on my bike.
  • I had time to reflect on and laugh at my own negative thoughts. “I hear you, but I don’t believe you.”
  • After class I had a conversation with someone else, giving me yet another new perspective on my own life.
  • I had the opportunity to have an impact on someone else’s day by complimenting them and commenting how good it was to see them.
  • And, oh yeah, I burned some calories too.

Your mind is going to throw up all sorts of negative barriers.  It likes to remind you how you’ve failed in the past, how it’s useless to try, how there is too much to overcome, how it has to be all-or-nothing.  The question is – are you going to believe it or are you going question whether that thought has to become your truth.

Right now is what matters.  What you choose to believe makes a difference.  Be willing to see your bigger picture.
